If you run a business, you’ll know how important the people you employ are to the success of your company.

Relationships, attitudes and communication can play a huge part in your work environment and individual and team performance.

Good people management is key to that. But to manage people effectively, it helps to understand different personality traits, as well as your own behaviour patterns and the best approaches to use depending on who you are dealing with and the outcomes you want to achieve.

Personality profiling for your business

At ActionCoach we use the DiSC profile system, published by Wiley, to analyse people’s personalities and behaviours – whether that’s your own, those of your team members and, ideally, both.

DiSC essentially provides a common language that people can use to better understand themselves and others and therefore adapt their behaviour accordingly for effective teamwork, relationships and leadership.

It’s really easy to do – the DiSC profile test involves a short questionnaire about individual behaviour in which you’ll see a series of statements and be asked to choose how you feel about them, such as ‘agree’, ‘strongly agree’, ‘disagree’ and so on. You’ll be asked how you respond to challenges, how you influence others and how you respond to rules and procedures.

This will generate a profile report about your behavioural style including your tendencies, needs, strengths, weaknesses and so on.

As well as information on your own personality, the report will include information about people with other characteristics, so you can gain a deeper understanding about how to interact with them.

Different types of personality

DiSC is based on four personality traits.

Dominance – Places emphasis on accomplishing results, the bottom line and seeing the bigger picture. They can be blunt, accept challenges and get straight to the point.

Influence – Emphasises influencing or persuading others, openness and relationships. They show enthusiasm, are optimistic, like to collaborate and don’t like being ignored.

Steadiness – Emphasis on co-operation, sincerity, dependability. People with this profile generally don’t like to be rushed, have a calm manner and approach and are supportive.

Conscientiousness – Values quality and accuracy, expertise and competency. Enjoys independence, objective reasoning, wants details and fears being wrong.

How personality profiling can help your business

DiSC profiling can be a really effective tool for improving communication in your teams as it enables people to learn to adapt their responses depending on the style of person they’re dealing with. As a manager, for example, you might use a different behaviour to the one you are most comfortable with in order to achieve the most effective results.

It can help you improve the way you respond to conflict, help working relationships, facilitate better teamwork, improve sales skills and become a more effective leader.

DiSC can be used as part of management training, sales training, for conflict resolution, teambuilding, customer service, communication and job coaching.
